Cynical animated drunks as modern day heroes

The bachelor's thesis is devoted to the study of selected antiheroes having some common features, such as alcoholism and cynicism. The investigated fictional characters are the protagonists of contemporary American adult animated series. Specifically, they are fictional characters from the series Archer (2009-2019), BoJack Horseman (2014-2020) and Rick and Morty (2013-2020). These are the main characters of aforementioned series, whose names also appear in the very name of the individual series. The full names of these fictional characters are Sterling Archer, BoJack Horseman and Rick Sanchez. All selected series come from contemporary American animated series and are characterized by a complex narrative, which allows the emergence of specific fictional worlds in which the individual protagonists operate. The work raises the question of why protagonists with these common characteristics appear in these selected contemporary animated series from American production. To answer this question, several sub-questions and hypotheses arise from them are set out. This bachelor thesis focuses on children's media heroes. Semi-structured interviews with selected children from ages six to twelve from elementary school in Kardašova Řečice were used for the research. Twenty one children participated in the research were answering questions about favorite heroes, watching TV, reading books or playing computer games. The primary purpose of this thesis was to determine what media heroes children choose, for what reason and where the heroes come from. The secondary purpose are the topics arising from the interviews with children, media consumption by children in general, its possible risk, pertinent regulation by parents and so on.
Cartoons political commentary: Freedom of speech and accusations of defamation

This thesis deals with the genre of political cartoons, which is a relatively understudied genre today. The thesis tries to review the past and also the present position of the genre under question, to describe its functions and possibilities; however, it namely focuses on the potential collisions between freedom of speech and other freedoms, rights or interests that might come up in the cartoonists' work. This thesis shows the way these collisions influence the position of the whole genre and analyses the sources and reasons for the attempts to limit cartoonists in their expression. Two different areas are examined here - continental European and American - as areas with different legal tradition and history, which is a fact that manifests itself in different approach to the concepts of freedom of speech. Through analysis of three different cartoon controversies from the past that came up in these areas, this thesis reaches the conclusion, that one of the greatest challenges the cartooning craft is facing today is the phenomenon of political correctness, mainly in the American territory, which has a chilling effect on the genre of cartoons.
